Immersive 360° Tour Winchester Mystery House

winchester mystery house

There’s a thrill, too, in knowing that Winchester likely hid some spaces so well that no one has seen them for over a hundred years. “There’s very possibly things we haven’t discovered yet, just because we don’t have blueprints,” Magnuson says. There’s solace in the idea that, even in privacy-phobic Silicon Valley, there are still secrets at the house—and plenty of questions that don’t really even need answers. Though the house has a reputation as a dim warren, its estimated 10,000 panes of glass reflect Winchester’s desire for natural light.

And what’s more, this picture of Sarah the recluse, shut away in her scary house communing solo with the dead, runs fundamentally contrary to the whole point of Spiritualism, says Ignoffo. “If you were to have a seance, you would not do it in a closet in the middle of your house. One particular attic space took the most effort, says the longtime house historian Janan Boehme, who helped with the restoration plans. There were staircases and things, but there was no railing, there was no safety at all,” she says. “If you walked across, you’d just fall through a hole.” The maintenance team had to build a new wooden walkway through the space.

Crowded feelings from an unusually shaped room or paranormal happenings? Sarah Winchester was a woman of independence, drive, and courage who lives on in legend. And the mansion she built is world renowned as much for the many design curiosities and innovations (many ahead of their time) as it is for the reported paranormal activity that resides within these walls.

Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled tour time to find parking or use a ride share service. Because sometimes even when we know the facts, it’s just far more appealing to indulge in a little mystery. Ghosts aside, the hard facts of Sarah’s life might actually leave us with a far more recognizable story about how people react to overwhelming change and loss — and how they can alienate themselves from the world in the process. But Ignoffo says she’s been unable to find any record that Sarah ever attended those Spiritualist gatherings that were going on locally.

Sarah, so the legend goes, moved from the East Coast to California to build this home after a psychic told her that doing so would appease the angry ghosts of all the people killed by Winchester rifles. The Cap is an unfinished round room constructed with redwood beams. When you stand precisely in the middle of the turret, your voice bounces uncannily off the walls. No one knows what happened, but Houdini found the visit memorable enough that he sent a newspaper clipping about it to the house’s owner. Some heroic construction work went into making sure the new spaces were safe, according to Michael Taffe, head of the house’s operations and maintenance team. “There’s a lot of modifications to actually make that a route,” he says.

Ghostly music

In the Daisy Bedroom—which is on the original tour—Winchester rang a bell to summon her servants, who couldn’t find her in the chaos. To this day, the cracked walls and torn wallpaper from that night remain, as do the panels of stained-glass flowers that give the room its name. “How would you feel if, all of a sudden, you got knocked out of bed by an earthquake? “You think the world is coming down around your ears.” After she was finally rescued, Winchester left the house and stayed on a houseboat in San Francisco Bay for a while.

Building The Winchester Mansion

From Sarah Winchester’s initial visit to San Jose to the present day, every step of the journey unveils a new chapter in the mansion’s rich tapestry of history. With additional unique architectural elements and captivating stories to share, Explore More promises a deeper look into our story like never before. In reality, Sarah was certainly an eccentric and deeply saddened by tragedies in her life. But she was also an incredible architectural designer, real estate investor, and empathetic small business woman.

The Abandoned 'Ghost Mansion' of Northern Italy

However, none are quite as strange as the story of the Winchester Mystery House, which has captured popular imagination for its unusual and sinister past. What many consider to be the heart of the mansion, the séance room was once the very private and off-limits room to everyone but Sarah Winchester herself. Legends say that nearby residents heard the bell tower (located outside of the séance room) at midnight and again at 2am. Was this to summon and release spirits to communicate with them? One exit is through the entrance door, another leads to an 8-foot drop into the kitchen below, and the final is a one-way door that resembles a secret passageway. You’ll have to come see for yourself what lies on the other side.

The book reports as fact that Coons told Winchester, "The Winchester family were being haunted by the ghosts of people killed by Winchester rifles," and the only remedy was to build a home for them to wander. That account was then cited as the real reason for her ongoing, and often baffling, constant construction. She was somehow trying to trick or confuse the ghosts away from her, and that it was protection from their vengeance. In truth, there was no documentation of Winchester meeting any psychic medium, and furthermore, there were no Boston spiritualist named Adam Coons. Building upon the foundations of our classic mansion tour, Explore More promises to reveal new dimensions of the mansion’s history, architecture, and intrigue. As we delve into the decades-long construction saga spanning 36 years, guests will witness the evolution of Winchester Mystery House from its humble beginnings to its current iconic status.

She hoped, perhaps, to get advice from the beyond as to how to spend her fortune or what to do with her life. Born around 1840, Sarah Winchester grew up in a world of privilege. She spoke four languages, attended the best schools around, married well, and eventually gave birth to a daughter, Annie. However, tragedy struck in her late twenties when Annie died, followed by the death of Sarah’s husband William more than a decade later.

The general tours are not wheelchair accessible, but there is an ADA Tour that includes garden access. Complimentary parking is available both onsite and across the street. Why did Sarah Winchester continue to make changes until her death? Some say that she believed she would die as soon as the house was declared complete.

The property then continued with some construction projects and restoration work to make it more of a cultural and tourist destination. In 1970, major restoration to bring the mansion back to its heyday began, and then in 1974, the Winchester Mystery House was granted state historic landmark status. Sarah’s house, like countless homes across the Bay Area, suffered severe damage from these shockwaves — so much so that the quake actually reduced the building’s height by several stories, says Ignoffo. Which means all those weird doors, all those “stairs to nowhere” could have led somewhere very real when they were first built. Already keenly interested in architecture, in 1886 Sarah purchased the modest two-story farmhouse in the San José area that she would turn into her giant mansion over more than three decades of construction.

The Winchester Mystery House And The Creepy True Story Behind It

And when you’re inside it, on one of the House’s daily public tours, it feels plausible that this mansion was designed by someone who perhaps wasn’t fully operating on this astral plane. But to understand the house — and how it came to be — you have to understand the human behind the legend. Enjoy unprecedented access to the world’s most bizarre mansion with an all-new tour —The Winchester Mystery House Immersive 360° Tour. This virtual experience allows guests to independently roam each level of the mansion, while exploring many rooms previously inaccessible on standard Estate tours. Winchester inherited $20 million after her husband died in 1881, and not long afterward moved from New Haven, Connecticut, to an eight-room farmhouse in orchard-studded Santa Clara Valley. A dedicated crew of carpenters built new rooms so quickly that no one bothered to draw up blueprints.

IT’S A WONDER

One of the first things you notice upon approaching the Winchester Mystery House is that the front door is not aligned with the roof peak above it—it is staggered slightly to the right. This might be a minor detail, but it hints at the disorder that unfolds within. The mastermind behind this architectural oddity—a sprawling Queen Anne Revival with 160 rooms—was Sarah Winchester, the widow of the rifle magnate William Winchester. Famously private and eccentric, she built onto her California home on and off for more than 30 years.

While visiting the Winchester Mystery House, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the must-see rooms inside of the world-famous mansion. Built during the Victorian era, Sarah Winchester’s eccentric house is a sight to behold any time of year, but it’s especially inspiring during the holidays. From November 25, 2022 through January 1, 2023, Winchester Mystery House will present daily mansion tours developed specifically for the holiday season. Guests will be treated to a sprinkling of Victorian holiday traditions, beautiful décor, festive music, and more. Supporting Winchester's actual competency were all of her friends, family, and even the builders on her property who defended her as a independent woman and a loyal widow who dressed in black to honor her losses.

Life Without Light: Creatures in the Dark With Sarah McAnulty

But those stories do, in some way, conceal the real Sarah Winchester. Publicity-shy though she may have been, she was more anchored in the real world than the spirit one. The consensus among the house’s staff is that she was a creative do-gooder who endured through profound personal loss. “She would give to causes that were dear to her, and she’d usually do it anonymously,” Boehme says. She paid her workers far more than the standard wage, and kept them on for many years in part because she wanted to ensure their livelihoods. Ignoffo speculates that she threw herself into her all-consuming building project to feel closer to her late husband—architecture had long been one of William Winchester’s passions.

Shortly after her husband’s death, Sarah left their home in New Haven, CT and moved out west to San Jose, CA. There, she bought an eight-room farmhouse and began what could only be described as the world’s longest home renovation, stopping only when Sarah passed on September 5, 1922. In 2018, Helen Mirren starred in Winchester as Sarah Winchester herself. The story took the rumors about the hauntings in the house and ran with them, depicting a woman crazed by the ghosts of Winchester rifles. Filming for the movie took place at the actual Winchester Mystery House. Winchester hired carpenters to work around the clock, expanding the small house into a seven-story mansion.

The official legend has it that the name, “Mystery House” was allegedly bestowed by Harry Houdini himself after he visited on Halloween night 1924. But considering the name appears in a local newspaper article in May that year, we can probably attribute that one to a little more early myth-making too. By the last decade of her life, Sarah owned many homes over the South Bay — not just the Winchester Mystery House.

The Terrifying True Story Of The Winchester Mystery House And The Tormented Heiress Who Built It

After her death in September of 1922, Sarah Winchester left all of her belongings to her niece, Marion, who had served as her personal secretary later in life. However, the Winchester Mystery House was never mentioned in her will, adding to the mystery of the home. In the years Sarah Winchester lived in the house, the residents of San Jose whispered about its strange construction and even stranger inhabitant, but it was in the years after her death that the wild stories became even wilder. Out of the 13 bathrooms in the home, only one was functional, in an effort to confuse any ghosts wishing to haunt a spigot.

Related Stories

Due to the lack of a plan and the presence of an architect, the house was constructed haphazardly; rooms were added onto exterior walls resulting in windows overlooking other rooms. Multiple staircases would be added, all with different sized risers, giving each staircase a distorted look. As far as what to do with her money, William answered that too; she was to use the fortune to build a home for the spirits of those who had fallen victim to Winchester rifles, lest she be haunted by them for the rest of her life.

winchester mystery house

“There’s a story about Teddy Roosevelt making an appearance in San Jose and wanting an audience with the Winchester widow,” says Magnuson. “He knocked on the front door and was not even let in.” Her eccentricity and the ghost stories—not to mention the scandal of a woman living autonomous and alone—have always been amplified in the house’s history. More striking, though, is the extraordinary artistic freedom she exercised in creating it, as well as the lengths to which today’s staff must go to keep the house intact and open. Starting Friday the 13th we will be hosting Flashlight Tours every Friday evening till February 24th. These self-guided tours give guests the opportunity to roam through the halls of the purportedly haunted Victorian mansion while hearing tales of its former and (possibly current!) inhabitants.

The true story behind the movie Winchester is one of the greatest haunted house legends ever. Many who arrive for the Mystery House’s public tours today are visiting in the hope of experiencing just that. Winchester Mystery House management and staff have worked extensively to prepare for reopening.

Boehme finds that the legend has little power to explain Winchester’s unusual construction ideas. “A lot of stories were told about her way before she died, even. She really wouldn’t engage or talk to the press because they said such bad things about her.” During her lifetime, her silence likely fed all sorts of rumors.

RDR2's House Building Scene Has Been Recreated In Lego

Other bits of décor include the front door, “feather trap” fan, grandfather clock, and dining room table and chairs. The clock feels like it could be re-homed into almost any LEGO family setting. Note the uneaten plate of “highly nutritious microwavable macaroni and cheese” on the table, too. The dining area on the right side of the first floor has a short set of stairs in front of an oddly open gap instead of windows.

Kevin vs the Wet Bandits

The Treehouse is pretty simple, with a skull and crossbones flag hanging. I was really impressed by the use of droid arms for the ladder. To really illustrate how large the McCallister House is, here’s the set sandwiched in between the Modular Police Station and Santa’s Visit. Marv’s alternate face, with an iron burned on his face is just perfect, and contender for one of the best minifigure faces of 2021. Last but certainly not least we have Marv Murchins and Harry Lime minifigures. Self-styled as the Wet Bandits, these two bumbling thieves are the true stars of the Home Alone franchise, and provide the comic-relief as their hair-brained scheme to rob the McCallister House comes undone.

Lego Marvel Motorcycle Chase: Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock, $8

Kevin can zipline to his backyard treehouse to foil the robbers. We restrict the limit a household can buy in order to be fair to all of our fans. If you’ve already reached that limit through previous orders your entire order may be cancelled. It was darker here, and my eyes didn’t adjust right away, but as soon as I had been sat down I felt something large and soft bump against my right shoulder.

The LEGO Group reveals fan-designed set based on the house from the all-time festive classic movie, Home Alone

The LEGO Ideas Home Alone set is instantly recognisable, perfectly capturing the grand McCallister family home, and is also packed with features that tell the story of Kevin’s holiday antics. As well as the exterior, the interior layout is true to the movie and includes the ground and first floor, kitchen, basement and attic. A new opening mechanism opens up the house for full enjoyment; the walls separate in the middle to open sideways and fully reveal the interior, while the roof also opens upwards. In addition, the set comes complete with the main characters of the movie in LEGO minifigure form, including; Kevin, robbers Harry and Marv, the old man Marley – and Kevin’s mum Kate.

Inside the rubbish bin, is a stickered tile with Kevin’s flight tickets hidden inside. To lean in on the Christmas vibe, there are Christmas string lights strewn across the front, as well as festive wreaths on the door and lamps. The dining room is decorated with a wreath and candles, but man, I hate those chairs. These chairs have an interesting build technique, but the execution is just awful.

The front of the home is built on hinged panels allowing access to the interior. A line of inset shots along the bottom call out some of the movie moments you can recreate, as well as showcasing that the different floors are modular. The minifigures shown in the main photo complete the cast, with Kevin’s mom arriving at long last. The build is fun and engaging, with plenty of play features all too often bypassed by other “adult” LEGO offerings lately.

My 5 year old has been having a blast both with the set, and I also used this as an opportunity to introduce the movie to her, which she thoroughly enjoys thanks to the family-friendly physical humour. Here’s a look at the basement, and the furnace, which at first is something that terrifies Kevin, but as he builds his courage, by the end of the movie, he is no longer afraid of it. It has a travel guide to New York, with the Statue of Liberty on it, as well as a personal Easter Egg to designer Antica Bracanov – who hails from Croatia, and wanted to subtly incorporate the Dalmatia region into the build. The kitchen is stuffed to the brim with references, with pizza boxes from Little Nero’s pizza, and a refrigerator with magnets and postcards on it. You’ll also be able to spot Buzz’s tarantula, which is freakishly large when compared to the minifigures! Buzz’s room upstairs is packed with a heap of detail – I love this nod to Duncan’s Toy Chest, the New York toy store from Home Alone 2 on his desk.

Some of the stickers don’t take advantage of the foil, but things like the refrigerator door and mirror certainly are improved by it. Uploaded to YouTube on April 25, this cute and impressive Lego recreation was made by YouTuber Lego Crow and they claim it’s their “biggest project yet! ” And I believe them, as this video features practically every moment and detail from the original housebuilding scene from RDR 2. Actually … yeah, in a kind of basic, existence-precedes-essence way. The experience and its design are pretty minimalist, so you’re forced to think a lot about your body moving through a narrative-free, contextless space.

Lego Creator 3 in 1 Exotic Parrot Building Toy Set, $16

And here’s a zoomed out shot of the dining room, which also shows off the statuette, that revolves in sync with the Michael Jordan cutout train. Tucked in the corner of the dining room is the large fan, ready to blow a giant pile of feathers into intruders. Each floor can also be easily separated, allowing you to access and peek into each room and section of the house from above, just like a modular. In the back of the van is a crate with a pearl gold trophy and tap – loot from the houses that the Wet Bandits have hit.

Where both minifigures shine is in the alternate face department – where Kevin has his signature “shocked” face, and Kate has her “I just left my son Home Alone” look, where she darts up from her seat on the plane. Here’s Kevin and his mum, Kate, who famously left Kevin behind and only realised midway on the flight to Paris. Both minifigures are decent representations of their on-screen counterparts, relying on their outfits instead of face prints to bring them to life. I REALLY like Home Alone’s instruction manual, and consider the creative and design direction to be one of the best of the LEGO for Adults. Unlike typical LEGO instruction manuals which have the set photo on the front, we’re instead treated to Kevin McCallister’s hand-drawn battle plan – lovingly re-created of course. At 3,955-pieces, and with a sticker price of US$250 / AU$400, the LEGO Home Alone set is a sizable set, amongst the biggest released in 2021, and is a satisfyingly complete homage to the classic Macaulay Culkin film.

Buzz’s bedroom is also awash in what I assume are Home Alone 2 Easter eggs, including a heart-in-a-safe and a stickered toy catalog for Duncan’s Toy Chest. There’s also a super-hero poster on the door For Oleksii Storozhuk no.1 – that’s got to mean something, too, right? Also in the room are Buzz’s BB-gun and a framed picture of his girlfriend, a joke that really hasn’t aged well. Pulling on it removes a supporting rod under the hinged shelves, letting them fall forward. When locked in place there’s a bit of droop to the top shelf, but it’s not super-noticeable. Construction starts on the McCallister home with a solid foundation that contains some simple Technic gearing.

There’s a neat play feature built into it, where the iron is placed in a chute on the upper kitchen level – flicking a lever, drops it downstairs, flying into Marv’s face to inflict some pretty serious burns. In many ways, it sets the stage the build, making you feel like you’re about to commence building all the booby traps, and getting the house ready for the Wet Bandits. There’s a four-poster bed, a nightstand with a (stickered) digital alarm clock, and a printed 1×1 popcorn box brick. The lamp is also a fun design, with a 2×2 flower as part of the shade.

Also included is a microfigure trophy to stand in for the problematic “Lawn Jockey” statue that keeps getting hit by the Little Nero’s Pizza delivery guy in the movie. The van is well designed, but that crate of loot is a little hard to get in and out of the back. It can be done, but it can end up a little more dramatic than probably intended.

Coolness [4] – Very impressed to see a licensed LEGO Ideas set that doesn’t hold back. 90s nostalgia is also trendy right nowKeepability [3] – Licensed LEGO Ideas sets usually hold their value well, and Home Alone has a special place in many people’s Christmas memories, so I can see this set ageing well. Fans of the beloved Pixar movie Up will want to get their hands on this Lego set. Included in the 598-piece kit is the front of the house from the film, four interior rooms, several balloons, accessories, and three minifigures, including Carl Fredricksen, Russell, and Dug.

The 14 Best Steakhouses in Los Angeles Eater LA

Our menu features 28 days of wet-aged USDA Prime steaks cooked in a 1,500-degree broiler served sizzling hot with clarified butter on plates heated to 450 degrees. At Mastro's we have an array of the freshest seafood selections, like our 2-foot-tall seafood tower of chilled crab legs, shrimp and oysters served over a cloud of dry-ice. Bespoke cocktails are dramatically presented in a haze of dry-ice, the list of world-class wine is extensive, and of course, Mastro’s has a premium selection of beer available. Part butcher shop-part restaurant, Gwen is chef Curtis and brother Luke Stone’s Hollywood meat sanctuary, which earned a Michelin star in 2022 for its overall excellence. The upscale steakhouse has more of a fine-dining feel with dishes like Josper-grilled squid with Thai chile or lobster tortellini leading into dry-aged cuts that are butchered on the premises. The wines and cocktails are also exemplary, but the real differentiator at Gwen is the service.

Chef's Specials

Every night features a nightly special, including a veal parmesan on Wednesdays and comforting beef stroganoff on Mondays. A little over 10 years ago, Chi Spacca became LA’s first meat-curing facility to be certified by the Department of Public Health. This Italian restaurant specializes in bistecca Fiorentina, a 50-ounce dry-aged prime porterhouse. For those intimidated by that massive size, there’s the crostata alla Fiorentina, a prime dry-aged, bone-in New York steak that registers only 36 ounces.

Pasta

Opt for the parrillada plate, as it comes with skirt steak, short ribs, sausages, and sweetbreads for a sampling of everything grilled and glorious. Experience exquisite wines, the freshest seafood, the finest prime steak, and genuine service. Though of late a mostly hipster hang in Los Feliz that garnered fame via the movie Swingers, The Dresden has for more than six decades been a steakhouse with a mean center-cut pork chop and one hefty peach melba. First opened in 1953, Taylor’s Steakhouse moved to their current location on 8th Street in 1970, then watched as the the neighborhood completely shifted through the decades. This longtime Koreatown staple still serves their ten-ounce sirloin culotte steaks, and sitting in the red naugahyde booths is as fun as ever.

Though Damon’s opened in 1937, it didn’t move to its current Brand Avenue location until 1980. Inside and out, it’s pure kitsch at Damon’s, where bartenders prepare potent mai tais with a proprietary recipe. Study the interior (while acknowledging tiki culture’s troubling past) and order the coconut fried shrimp, marbly coulotte steak topped with butter, or the Nebraska Angus ribeye with a side of creamed corn. On the second floor of the towering Intercontinental Hotel in Downtown LA is chef Shin Thompson’s meat emporium serving high-end yakiniku and omakase for Japanese beef aficionados. Beverly Grove’s Carlitos Gardel features Argentinian-grilled USDA prime steaks at exceptionally reasonable prices.

Chef Walter Nunez assembles a crowd-pleasing menu of clams casino, gnocchi with lobster, and lamb shank doused in rosemary. The main draw is an eight-ounce filet, bone-in tomahawk, but the wagyu flight showcasing two-ounce portions from the US, Australia, and Japan is equally great. Chef David LeFevre’s midcentury modern steakhouse uses a white oak grill to deliver outstanding steaks in Manhattan Beach. The Arthur J steak menu falls into two primary categories — USDA prime and certified Angus — though one can also score a deluxe Japanese wagyu beef rib-eye cap.

A busy option in Venice Beach for steak lovers, American Beauty excels because of its menu, ample outdoor seating, casual manner, and striking midcentury space on Rose Avenue. Stop in for cocktails, dry-aged porterhouses, thick grilled bacon, and stuffed hash browns with melted onions and sour cream. Backed by heavy hitters like Dr. Dre and NBA legend Jerry West, this Sherman Oaks steakhouse opened in November 2023. Try the petit filets, dry-aged 42-ounce tomahawk steak, or choose from three different types of wagyu. Order the caprese-inspired martini shaken with Grey Goose, Campari, tomato simple syrup, and sherry vinegar, and garnished with fresh mozzarella, and enjoy the entire meal. Starting in 1933, the Georgian Room served stars over decades including Judy Garland and Dick Van Dyke.

Head to the top floor of Eataly in Century City Terra and take a moment to observe the sprawling views with a whiff of smoky flavors emanating from the grill. Always take recommendations from Terra’s seasoned staff, but it’s best to start with burrata, grilled bread, and salads before moving on to grilled fish and meat skewers. The flavorful culotte bistecca and thin bone-in tagliatan are beautifully served on a cutting board. In Redondo Beach, this elegant steakhouse does beef exceedingly well with a wood-fried sear on the outside while maintaining a juicy, tender core.

A legendary Hollywood Blvd. haunt, Musso & Frank Grill has been cutting steaks since 1919. The decor hasn’t changed much since then, and the waiters still wear those bright red jackets, but for pure charm (and a great bar), it’s hard to beat. Enjoy live entertainment at the bar seven nights a week while sipping on hand-crafted cocktails and eclectic wines. Commerce’s longtime corner spot known as Steven’s Steak House has been serving up thick plates of prime rib to late night diners for half a century, and still does brisk business with locals and the post-casino crowd. Possibly the most well-known name in all night steaks, Pacific Dining Car on 6th St. has been sizzling up steaks 24/7 since 1921. The interior still matches the name, too, complete with faux luggage racks and the wood-paneled feel of dining car days gone by.

Always leave room for All Day Baby veteran pastry chef Thessa Diadem’s incredible-looking desserts. Thankfully, Los Angeles has no shortage of fantastic steakhouses, with top-tier restaurants serving inventive and classic cocktails and always delicious sides in addition to all kinds of grilled red meat. If classic chophouses, modern beef palaces, or spots that serve dashes of Japanese flavors, here are 14 feast-worthy steakhouses in Los Angeles. The Clawson Steak House naturally specializes in great steaks such as the Prime Rib, Filet Mignon, New York, Delmonico, and our signature 30 oz. Porterhouse Steak, but that is just the beginning of the wide variety of entrees offered on the menu. Executive Chef Josh Ashby will continue to tempt you with an array of Appetizers and chef's specials.

Everyone asks the same question upon entering this Santa Monica establishment, “How long has this place been here? ” Since 1949, the Golden Bull has served stellar chops in an old-school dining room with serious Mad Men vibes, stiff drinks, and friendly service. Golden Bull is also one of the few places on the Westside that serves prime rib roast every night. The prime rib is still the draw here, though the outrageously neon interior is its own reason to go. Or, rather, reverts back to the 1950’s, when Baked Alaska, pepper steaks and hand-spun salads hit each table, and the room looks like a plastic jungle of fake foliage.

Don’t forget to share the famous focaccia di recco to start, a cheesy flatbread perfected by chef Nancy Silverton. Burbank’s 77-year-old Smoke House is a time capsule with red leather booths, white tablecloths, a carpet that’s likely decades old, neon signs, and so much casual charm. The slow-roasted prime rib is the house specialty and is served au jus for a reasonable $42. In fact, the Smoke House’s menu is one of the best deals in town, especially the tri-tip sandwich for $22. Part local haunt, part karaoke bar and all steak-y kitsch, Torrance’s The San Franciscan has been dishing shrimp cocktails and signature three quarter pound slices of prime rib since 1963.

A major story of 2021 is how well LEGO have innovated minifigure designs (see Queer Eye), but Kevin and Kate McCallister are pretty basic. I do like Kate’s brown power suit, with the large shirt collars that just scream late 80s and early 90s fashion. Most of the stickers are fairly easy to apply and small, with the exception of the OH-KAY plumbing van ones, which you’ll need deft hands to align. Measure website performance and ensure correct website behaviors for visitors, including retention of user settings and preferences. Marv, as we’ve noted already, has probably the wildest dual-expression head LEGO has ever produced. The “smushed by an iron” look is so iconic, though, that I suspect graphic designer Kirsten Bay Nielsen probably didn’t have too much trouble getting it past management.

Holiday Main Street

On the opposite side of the level, the bathroom set is coming together. The callbacks here are a wrapped toothbrush, silver-foil stickered mirror, and a bottle of shaving balm. From the back there are a few necessary concessions – the big hole in the dining room wall that we mentioned earlier, some Technic connection points around that gap, and the plunger knob at the top of the stairs.

Screamingly fun time

The remaining bags are packed loose, creating a suitably chaotic unboxing experience. The grouping does help to split up the large quantity of part bags included in the set, and the secondary box helps keep the instructions from getting too banged up in transit. The LEGO Group’s mission is to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow through the power of play. The LEGO System in Play, with its foundation in LEGO bricks, allows children and fans to build and rebuild anything they can imagine. Now in brick form for the first time, the LEGO Ideas Home Alone set is based on a design submitted to the LEGO Ideas platform by 28-year-old Alex Storozhuk from Ukraine.

By fans for fans

This is where the kitchen/basement sub-building will connect much later on. It’s standard practice for LEGO to often include an extra copy of pieces that are likely to go missing during construction. Thanks to the wide array of elements in this set, you’ll be treated to a pretty big pile of swag this time around. (The 1×2 Technic brick shown here isn’t an extra; it snuck into the wrong pile during photography.)  It’s a nice little perk, as these parts are great for custom building. The two sticker sheets are full of the single-use movie details that it didn’t make sense for LEGO to convert to printed elements. The first sheet has a plethora of family portraits, a great meta-LEGO joke (more on that in a bit), and other key details like a string of firecrackers and a bowl of mac-n-cheese.

Here’s a look at the upper level of the house, with Buzz’s room on the right, a large and spacious hallway, and Kevins’ parents bedroom on the left, complete with ensuite bathroom. Speaking of which, here’s a look at the entrance, which has a lovely arch and pillars above the front door, with the McCallister “M” welcome mat. Here’s a look at the back which has the extension out the back, for the kitchen and basement.

ALONE is a site-specific, immersive and artistic exploration of fear, loneliness and self preservation. It’s a thirty minute walkthrough experience which you may only enter alone, and where you become a willing victim to your own inner demons. Borrowing the structure of a typical haunted house, but ditching the blood, guts and psychotic clowns with chainsaws, ALONE explores the deepest regions of the bizarre, and places you as a participant in your own nightmare. So I've decided that the next time my friends come over, they'll be greeted with a "Hello" followed by a "Come in, it's great to see you". We'll step over the Lego, cars and trains, leave the kids to go wild, and just enjoy being together.

I turned and was immediately face-to-face with a life-size ET doll. And I cannot tell you why, but in that moment I felt the entire bottom of my stomach drop away, and I screamed. Anyway, to my surprise, it turns out not everything exists to be conquered. Colder weather can put a LEGO lover in a brick-clicking mood, thanks to all of the events, conventions, and gifting holidays that pop up around this time of year. If you love the Home Alone movies, and appreciate all things 90s nostalgia, or want to introduce your young kids to Home Alone, and give them a satisfyingly large playset for Christmas, I highly recommend the set. Home Alone is best as a family movie, and similarly, this set is best appreciated by kids and children, who will appreciate the numerous play opportunities, rooms, and furniture.

Lego Icons Flower Bouquet Building Set, $48

The van has a removable roof rack with pipes, an opening rear door, and a bench-seat built for two. There’s also a removable box of golden loot (a trophy and a kitchen faucet) to add a bit of story value. Every room is packed with details from the movie, such as the after-shave lotion from “The Scream” bathroom scene, Buzz’s pet tarantula, the robbers’ van, the paint cans used to knock them down, and the treehouse with zipline. Other features include the fireplace, Christmas tree, a toy train, grandfather clock, dining table and record player.

The record player turntable works well, although it’s spaced a bit too far back from the windows to really be seen when the outer walls are closed. As noted earlier, the extra rooms aren’t really movie-accurate in positioning, but they don’t feel out of place. Having them as a removable sub-building also means you can display your set in a shallower area, if you store this bit somewhere else.

If you don’t fall in the above categories, this is a good set, just not great. Little things like the lack of arm printing, and no alternate face for Harry just feel like wasted opportunities. In going too large (too squeeze as much in), the LEGO McCallister House creates an awkward conundrum – integrating it into your LEGO displays. Its comically large dimensions, especially when placed alongside Winter Village or even Modulars necessitates that you display it as a standalone model, to truly allow it to shine.

Alone doesn’t try to teach you how to feel, at least in most of the rooms. Most of the discomfort is self-generated, which means it’s harder to shake. I know that my friends love me for me and would never comment on the state of my house or say anything to hurt my feelings. They're here to see me and my family so we can catch up and have a nice time together.

And trying to keep the house neat and tidy all of the time just feels like a bit of a waste of my time anyway. The LEGO Group has revealed their fan-designed set based on the house from Home Alone just in time for the holidays. If you’re a massive Home Alone fan, and want to reignite your sense of nostalgia for the quintessential family-friendly 90s Christmas movie, you will love every bit of this set. Later on, Kevin has mocked up a holiday party to confuse the Wet Bandits.

Later, Kevin drags his sled indoors for a bit of downhill action.

In this next section we’ll walk through the film’s timeline and see what play options are in place. We’ll start off with early in the film as the Wet Bandits are stowing the loot from one of their recent burglaries. The treehouse can be connected to the main house with a long bit of string, locked in place with sloped 1×2 tile. You do need a bit of room to pull that string taut, so plan accordingly. Inside the basement is the washing machine, tool box, and a sticker of Marv’s sock stuck to the floor with tar.

Sure, it looks like a horror film as Kevin’s demonic visage is warped by the sticker, but at least LEGO didn’t make me deal with a mostly naked Kevin minifigure made just for this scene, too. The kitchen set is compressed a bit, but still contains all they key elements, plus a few. The blowtorch trap by the door is present, as is the TV/VCR combo playing “Angels With Filthy Souls”. Kevin’s imaginary foe of the basement furnace gets a lot of love, too. The build here is suitably menacing, with a light-brick providing a hellish glow when the top grate/mouth is pushed down.
